History of Cary

The history and development of Cary began with deeding 640 acres along Crabtree Creek to Francis Jones in 1749. With the prime location between New Bern and Hillsborough, more families came to the area to establish farms. The first inn, known as Bradford’s Ordinary, was the first business and first known name of the town.

In the 1850’s, the North Carolina Railroad made its way into Cary. This led Frank Page, Cary’s father and founder, to purchase 300 acres on either side of the railroad. He forged the way for the development of the town, leading the way as the postmaster, railroad agent, mayor, general store operator, and sawmill and hotel owner.

As the town grew, private and public education improved, roads were paved in and out of the city, and local businesses, particularly those that catered to farmers, thrived. Today, Cary is part of the Research Triangle that is noted for its proximity to nearby universities and the business community in Research Triangle Park.
